    Insulation

    Your Challenge

When do I need a Dielectric Insulation material?

A dielectric insulation material is required when you want to somehow control the transmission or storage of electrical or electromagnetic energy with the minimum amount of loss in energy. This is relevant for electrical circuitry such as for rigid and flexible printed circuit boards, electrical components such as capacitors and for wire and coaxial cable applications.

What is a Dielectric Insulation Solution?

There are many types of dielectric insulation materials and they all work by being polarizable in the presence of an electric field. Any material that has electrons that can be polarised by a field but not freely conducting in that field is a dielectric insulation material.

A dielectric insulator is characterised by dielectric constant (Dk) which is relative ability to store electrical energy versus a vacuum and by dielectric loss (Df) which is energy lost through heat generation by the material in an alternating electric field. These values can change depending on conditions such as moisture content, temperature and frequency.

What is the difference between insulation and dielectric insulation?

Electrical insulation limits the flow of electricity and so is often used as protection both in terms of protecting the electrical circuitry from damage or by protecting life or equipment that may come into contact with the electrical conductor.

Dielectric insulation can also, and often does, limit the flow of electricity, but it also stores electrical and electromagnetic energy. For solely insulation purposes, a key parameter is dielectric strength which is the maximum electric field that the material can endure before breaking down and allowing current to flow.

    The Saint-Gobain Solution

When should I use a Saint-Gobain Dielectric Insulation solution?

Use Saint-Gobain Dielectric Insulation when you want consistent and low loss dielectric performance in challenging conditions. Although there are lots of materials that can act as dielectric insulation materials, Saint-Gobain Dielectric Insulation maintains performance in the presence of corrosive materials, high moisture environments, at high temperatures and when operating in high frequency applications (above 6 GHz).

What are the typical uses of Saint-Gobain Dielectric Insulation solutions?

Aerospace wire and cable applications, high frequency coaxial cable, high frequency and high speed rigid and flexible printed circuit boards (PCB) and high temperature capacitors.

    Your Results

What are the benefits of using Saint-Gobain Dielectric Insulation solutions?

For signal transmission, benefits include high speed, low attenuation and good signal integrity even at high frequency use.

In high frequency PCB and flexible PCB applications, such as those used in 5G telecommunication networks and for automotive ADAS and autonomous driving applications, the benefit is fast signal transmission and broad bandwidth usage.

For power transmission, high dielectric strength and combustion resistance gives safe working performance at high power and high temperature. This performance is delivered across a wide range of environmental conditions.
